Cooper Square Committee is seeking an experienced Tenant Organizer to create tenant associations to fight harassment and displacement in the Lower East Side/Chinatown and to staff a multi-building tenant coalition. Participate in city-wide housing campaigns to strengthen housing code enforcement, strengthen the rent laws and promote affordable housing. CSC is active in several campaigns – preventing lead poisoning, fighting warehousing and illegal hotels. Organizers typically work 2-3 days in the office every week, and work from home on days when they don’t have door knocking or in-person meetings.

You must be able to work as part of a team with six other tenant organizers, build consensus, have a good understanding of organizing principles and practices, NYC and NYS housing laws and rent regulations, and be committed to developing leadership in a multi-cultural community.

Applicants should have at least two years of organizing experience, good public speaking skills, and an interest in building the affordable housing movement. College degree preferred. Bilingual (English/Spanish) strongly preferred.

The salary is in the $57k to $60k range depending on experience.

Health and dental benefits included. Employer offers a 401k retirement plan, and participation in a Flexible Spending Account (FSA) and Commuter plan.
