This year, we will be honoring Councilmember Carlina Rivera for eight years of service in the City Council. Throughout her tenure, she has championed legislation to protect tenants’ health and safety from disruptive renovation work and lead poisoning, and to hold the city’s code enforcement agencies more accountable. She has taken a strong stand against apartment warehousing and illegal hotels, and has advanced legislation to shield small businesses from landlord harassment. Our other honoree at this year’s gala is the Signature Tenant Coalition. In the wake of Signature bank’s failure in March 2023, CSC joined with tenant leaders and advocates to form a subcommittee within ANHD’s Equitable Reinvestment Coalition, which later evolved into the Signature Tenant Coalition (STC). Together, they have worked to support tenants in formerly Signature-financed buildings — educating residents about the unique role of the FDIC, organizing community outreach, sharing critical data, and convening roundtables where tenants could voice concerns directly to the FDIC and other key stakeholders. Their efforts have been vital in holding financial institutions accountable and empowering tenants to fight for safe, stable housing.
