Dear residents:

The workshop series on the major documents in the MHA Cooperative Information Package continues in May with a third course, “Understanding the Bylaws, Part 1.” If you’ve already signed the Purchase Agreement or even if you’re still considering whether or not to become a shareholder, I strongly encourage you to take this two-part course (the second part will be in June).

The bylaws will be the lifeblood of the co-op. As the co-op’s laws, they declare who can do what, when, where, and how in the operation of the co-op. For example, the bylaws spell out the qualifications, roles, and powers of shareholders, directors, and officers. They also describe in detail: how the co-op’s books and records are to be kept; how carrying charges and special assessments are to be determined, and how the issuance, transfer, and resale of shares are to be handled; and how maintenance and repair issues involving the buildings and apartments are to be dealt with. The bylaws are a wealth of information. The more you know about them, the more confident and effective you will be as a shareholder.

“Understanding the Bylaws: Part 1” will be given on:

Saturday, May 14, 12-1:30 p.m.

Tuesday, May 17, 10-11:30 a.m.

Tuesday, May 24, 6:30-8 p.m.

All the classes will be held on the 4th floor of 59-61 East 4th Street. Please note they will promptly begin 15 minutes after the indicated start time. So please arrive early to sign in. And don’t forget to bring your MHA Cooperative Informative Package with you! If you have any questions about the workshop or any other co-op related issue, please don’t hesitate to contact me.

Quite a few of you have expressed to me on a number of occasions that, if the co-op is formed, you’d consider running for the board of directors, if only you had a better understanding of what the job entails.

The more candidates you’ll have to pick from for 10 open board-of-director positions, the better. And new and knowledgeable board members are always a good thing for any organization. And so, by popular demand and to give you knowledge that empowers, I’m holding a one-time, special workshop:
